I have gotten my thumb stuck in my mouth twice. My Mom and Dad were in Costa Rica the first time it happened. Our respite person, Mary, was taking care of me. I was at school when it happened. After a few days with the sore not getting better, she took me to Allina Health Northfield Clinic. Mary never had to take me in to see a doctor before that time. She was questioning my P. C. A., JoAnne, frantically.
Mary asked JoAnne like “Where are Blake’s medical cards?” We saw Dr. Goodwin. Dr. Goodwin was being sarcastic. He asked me “How did that thumb taste?” I laughed. He had the nurse wrap my thumb in an ace bandage. It was my left thumb, my good hand. When I hit it, it hurt. I kept forgetting it hurt so I kept hitting it. When I hit it, I jumped and I thought “That’s right. that is the thumb that hurts. ” It was a bad experience.
The second time I got my thumb stuck in my mouth was with a former P. C. A. of mine, Rachel. I was in bed on my stomach stretching my neck. I put my head down to rest and I forgot my thumb was there. I bit it. Rachel came into my room and she quickly called my Mom to see what she could do. Rachel rolled me on my back There is a trick to make someone open their mouth when they are biting something. You rub their cheek with your knuckles.
My Mom took me to Northfield Urgent Care right away. The doctor wanted an x-ray of my thumb. He wanted to see if it was fractured or not. It wasn’t, thank goodness. He just bandaged it. I was used to hitting it with my switch. When I hit my switch with my thumb at those times, it hurt.
